You may have already guessed this, but I think the whole pumpkin patch experience is totally overrated. But it seems like everyone in the area makes it a yearly tradition...yes, literally everyone...which means if you go in nice weather, then you are there with EVERYONE. Or, you go on a slightly rainy day (like I tried this year) and you get your one-year-old covered stem to stern in mud and finger painting pumpkins.
AND I couldn't even get a decent picture of the three boys. Josh wouldn't cooperate. But that wasn't all. I'm tired of every little ride or hay maze costing a ridiculous amount of money. What happened to the good ol' fashioned free hay truck ride? And did the driver of the cow train have to talk to his co-worker for five minutes while I sat in the cow car with my disgruntled, muddy son? And why didn't I think to bring Josh a change of clothes? To top it off, my sweet Sammy just really wanted us to bring home a gallon of cider, and I don't blame him: it looked delicious. Price tag? $11! I'm not kidding. I couldn't do it. Organic or no, that ridiculous.
I'm sure the boys will survive without a pumpkin patch experience. Heck, I had never been to one until I went to college in the Willamette Valley. We'll grow our own, pick them on a beautiful day, and heck, maybe even make our own scarecrow like we used to with my dad. That will beat this "adventure" for sure!
Fail group picture #1 (taken in lame maze that costs $2/child)
Josh was obsessed with trying to get through the hole. Group picture fail #2.
Seth and Sam (in contrast to Josh) had a wonderful picture smiling day. I love this picture of them! (Almost makes the stupid, expensive cow train worth it)
Josh was thrilled with the amount of mud
And I'm sure the farm was thrilled with his finger painting skills (p.s. guess who got to carry Josh after all this muddy play?)
Sam and Seth found their pumpkins!
Find the Joshy in the pumpkin patch (ok, so this picture is adorable)
"You're not having fun, mom? I having a blast!"
These two, seriously picture taking stars. (Sam, Seth)
He loved climbing around on the pumpkins
And the grand finale: group picture fail #3. Thanks a lot Josh.
Disclaimer: I reserve the right to indeed still take my children to a pumpkin patch next year should I decide that for some reason maybe this year it will be a better experience. Or if my desire for the perfect group picture while sitting on top of pumpkins trumps my memories of past failures. However, I do intent to break out of the Pacific Northwest mold and declare that the pumpkin patch outing is not a necessity of fall.
