Josh's 6th Birthday

Our little Joshy turned 6 at the end of August. He asked for basically the same special things that he asked for last year: eating Chilaquiles at Frida's, Jumpster with brothers, swimming in the dark and then rum cake for dessert. We had the Frost family over for a dinner of sweet and sour chicken, and our neighbors were able to swim and have cake with us. It was a fun day!
I saw this minion balloon and I felt like it screamed "Josh"
Everytime the same thing: salsa roja con cochinita pibil
I had the waiters surprise Josh with a candle (on fruit because he couldn't have cake or ice cream due to allergies). They rang a bell and then all gathered around to sing. He was SO surprised and embarrassed and it was the sweetest thing ever.
Then they had us all put on Mexican hats and headbands for a family picture. I love this picture so much. This restaurant has been one of our consistent places for our years here; the servers know us and our order and it's a very special place.

I haven't been as good about writing age updates on the kids (it's all I can do to keep on the blog these days!). But, I want to quickly do a write-up on Josh. He is such a unique and funny child, and quite honestly, pretty difficult to parent right now.

He is a child of a lot of contrasts. Fun but hard. Always pushing boundaries. Snuggly, but very energetic and physical. Immature in some ways, but older than his age in many others.

Josh is delightful and full of joy; he also has days that he is extremely pessimistic and contrary. He loves to play and has the best laugh ever. He is passionate and very funny. However, he also is extremely persistent to get his way, and if he doesn't, he is mad and ornery. When I pick him up from school, he happily waves at all his teachers and knows so many kids who all yell his name, "Joshua!" in this adorable Mexican way. But when I ask him how his day was, he'll tell me, "Bad." I've decided to stop asking him.

Josh is gregarious and extroverted. However, he is also extremely anxious about anything new socially. So, if he's comfortable in a social situation, we will barely see him and he'll be the life of the party. But, if he doesn't know what to expect, he will be in a panic before the event, forecasting all the bad things that might happen. He is soooo courageous sometimes and so timid and frightened others; we never know when to expect what...it's all on Josh's terms.

Josh loves to do anything physical: play catch, soccer, wrestle, swim...he's a very tactile child. He does not like to sit and play alone. In fact, he doesn't like to anything alone. He thrives off being with people. He is still not interested in reading (although he can do it), but is sometimes showing some interest in math. His teachers really enjoy him in school and say that he's funny. Boy do we know it: this kid always keeps us on our toes!

We love him so and know that he's just what our family needs! A little (or big) spark. Every day.
Snuggling with Piglet. I always want to remember the way he snuggles Piglet under his chin. Thank the Lord for Piglet; I don't think that he would have been able to survive a first year in school without him.
Josh has insisted on keeping his hair long. I have to admit, it's pretty darn cute, especially with this little curl.
Once his hair got this long, we insisted on a top trim.
This picture reminds me of how many teeth Josh has lost this past year! I think that he's up to 6!
Embracing the silly face with my silly boy.
So joyful when he wants to be.
