Saltillo: Desert Museum and Cathedral

May 1st is Mexican Labor Day, therefore, Ben and the boys all had the day off. We had been really wanting to visit Saltillo, a city about an hour from our house in order to see the Desert Museum, where we had heard there was quite a few dinosaur fossils. It sure felt good to get out of Monterrey on a little road trip and the museum ended up being quite wonderful!
T-Rex in the entrance
The Terradactal fossil in the top right of the picture was my absolute favorite!
Standing under the T-rex (the boys are acting scared for me)
A type of dinosaur who's bones are only found in Mexico. Coahuila, the Mexican state that Saltillo is in, is well-known for how many fossils have been found there.
So cool!
We were all in awe of the size of the bones.
The underside of the Terradactal. It is so much bigger than I ever imagined!

The museum housed so much more than just dinosaur bones (although those were the coolest part).
It had a lot about Mexican history.
Early Mexican Indians.
Fossils found in Mexico...this one was a bear.
Lots of taxidermy...which the kids LOVED.
Find Seth...
Great thumbs up, Josh.
Sam, Seth (Seth was very into the "acting scated" pose on that day)
The museum also had somewhat of a zoo. They had a ton of snakes, lizards, etc. displayed, as well as buffalo, wolves, coyotes, and other animals.

The greatest moment of the day was when we inadvertently ran into an American family that we had met once before here in Monterrey. The last time we met them was back in October while on a hike in Chipinque, when I overheard their daughter speaking English. We had talked for a quite a while on that day and had a lot in common, but never ended up reconnecting. Well, while in the museum in Saltillo, the same daughter I had overheard before was looking at the same snake tank as the boys, and I spoke to her in Spanish. She replied to me that she spoke English, and I turned around to see her mother...whom I had already met! It was a great reunion. We chatted for some time at the museum, then ended up having lunch together with their family. Then we all visited a cathedral together and walked a bit of the town to try to find a market (in vain...it was closed for Labor Day). Meeting up with Gamba family truly made the day more fun. On our drive back home, Sam said, "I think that God wants us to be friends with those people...we keep running into them!" I agree with Sam and we hope to see them again.
Walking through Saltillo with the Gamba family, we stuck out even more than usual. Ten Americans together with two very tall dads! (Mr. Gamba is almost as tall as Ben and wore a somewhat loud cowboy hat.)
The Cathedral in Satillo is exquisite!

Check out that carvings!
The inside was beautiful as well.
The cathedral from further away. It has a really neat square outside it as well.
